CD: Artist: Rarn Available from: Rarn website

I've listened to the sample tracks by the Tyrannosaurus Rex inspired Rarn, a British duo with a sound familiar to fans of Bolan's early work (really loved those early albums, especially A Beard of Stars which is absolutely beautiful).

Anyway, this band sounds a LOT like the classic Bolan/Took Tyrannosaurus Rex, which is of course a huge complement from a fan. Even the lyrics are remarkably reminiscent of Marc's style. Give it a listen on their website. I'm sure you'll like it.

CD: The Tapestry of Delights Available from: Black Widow Records

Arriving in the Mars mailbox was a CD from Italy's Black Widow Records called The Tapestry of Delights. What makes this CD of covers of 60's psychedelia interesting to fans of all things Bolan was the inclusion of covers of two Bolan tunes: the early Tyrannosaurus Rex's Rumbling Spires and the T. Rex classic Jewel.

Rumbling Spires is covered by Beggars Farm. Bolan fans will find the early metal sound a stark contrast to Tyrannosaurus Rex's acoustic songs from this period, but the band captures a taste of that early, hard psychedelia (think early King Crimson).

The cover of Jewel by Fantasyy Factoryy doesn't stray as far from the Bolan version. Lead singer Alan Tepper's voice is smooth and reminiscent of Marc's. The guitar riff and bongo backing present an interpretation that's close to the original, but it's nice to hear a new take on Marc's music.

The rest of the CD is equally enjoyable. If you're a fan of the 60's or just an aging hippie, you should find something you like. And if you're a Bolan fan, you may want to add The Tapestry of Delights to your collection.
